Moon in orbit about Earth

Guest blog by Tim Stiles: I see the beauty of you and the potential for humanity to engage in concert with you.

Dear Earth,

I hope this little note finds you well. It's been some time since I last wrote to you and, while circling about every 28 days (you're familiar with the drill: waxing crescent, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, waning crescent, invisible!!) I have been thinking about our conversations on the significant shifts that are happening and - shining a bit brighter today - wanted to share some recent thoughts.

When we last chatted, you expressed well your concerns and the frustration you feel about efforts to mitigate, slow, and reverse the impacts of the changes you are experiencing. It is indeed a daunting challenge, and I imagine at times the negative news can often overshadow the progress you've made.

From my distant spot, I'm the last to remind you of the myriad amazing places I have the joy of seeing every day, so close I could almost reach out and touch them: vibrant green jungles, rippling sands, tranquil waves of rural grasslands, towering vistas of wind sculpted sandstone, beaches happy to receive the continuous drumbeats of waves running up gentle slopes. I write as your personal satellite of hope amidst the challenges of the changes affecting you.

I do understand the concerns about your state and the negative impacts that seem to dominate the discourse. It's true, the situation is grave, and the path ahead difficult. Yet, I believe it is crucial to also recognize the strides made in the fight against the threats to you. And I've noticed humanity is being galvanized as well.

Nations are cooperating, agreeing, and uniting in common causes to slow the growth of harmful emissions, while encouraging, magnifying, and innovating surges toward renewable sources. And let's not forget harnessing, scaling, and multiplying grassroot initiatives contributing to a global mosaic of change and nurturing a community of stewardship.

I share these examples not to diminish the reality of the challenges you face, but to offer a glimpse and a prospective into the progress that is being made. We may hear of - and indeed experience - some setbacks. But we've been together a long time, and it is a long game. Through focus and diligence, progress continues to be made. This progress charges my optimism and drives my belief that you will succeed.

I see the beauty of you and the potential for humanity to engage in concert with you to enact the changes necessary to secure your care and preservation.

Let us continue this conversation, my big blue and green companion. I shall be here always to contribute to our mutual balance and support in a shared commitment to a healthier world.

With warm regards, I remain your ever-present friend,

Moon
