Renewables are cheap. So our energy systems future is secure, cleaner and cheaper.

That’s the case Nick Winser, the UK’s Electricity Networks Commissioner, makes with conviction. Drawing on decades as a power systems engineer, he tells me why the transition to clean energy is no longer a trade-off, it’s a win-win. With breakthroughs in wind and solar, Nick believes we can now build an energy system that is not only cleaner and more secure, but also cheaper than what came before.

I press him on whether one country can lead by example, or if global coordination is essential. We also discuss the growing political pushback against climate and inclusion agendas — and how rising inequality and social instability could risk slowing the pace of change. He argues that the economic strength that the UK will gain from decarbonising its energy systems will inspire other countries.

Still, Nick’s optimism is unwavering. He believes economics will ultimately drive the shift — but only if leaders move now to show that a clean future works for citizens and businesses alike.

This was a conversation about urgency, belief, and the solutions we already have at our fingertips. The challenge, as ever, is not capability - it’s momentum.
